Bird Rattle Toys : Homemade Bird Toys

Making your own bird rattles is a great way to give your pet something to do. You can buy a lot of these small bird toys online, but why do that when you can pretty much make the same sort of things at home? The imporant thing is to find suitables containers and fillings for the rattles.

Depending on the size of the bird, you'll want to choose your container for the rattle accordingly. Some good choices for larger birds are small plastic milk bottles. For smaller birds, try a small plastic mint tin such as a tic tac box. Avoid using glass as it's too heavy. I've heard some people using small metal boxes, such as tiny mint tins, but I'd be careful with metal. In all cases, make sure the container has a secure lid, or that you can plug up the hole with something so the rattles don't come out.

Experiment and see what works best. You may have to glue something onto the bottle or tin so that you are able to hang them from top of the cage with string. Or, if they are small enough (or your bird is big enough), you can plan for them to carry them around. You might have to glue on some sort of handles for them to tote them around.

After finding the correct container, you're halfway there to making your new homemade bird toy. Now all you have to do is find some sort of safe rattling agent. I think the best choice might be dried beans or lentils. Uncooked rice might also work, but since the grains are smaller it'll be softer rattle - and if there are any small holes in the container they could leak out. In any case, using a safe natural food for a rattle is good in case they do leak out.

Now all you do is fill up the rattle with an appropriate number of beans or lentils, and seal it up and you've got yourself a bird rattle. Some people have also used old baby rattles as well - just make sure that the plastic is safe.

Warning: Don't put anything hazardous or sharp inside the bird rattle. You don't want your pet exposed to it in case it should accidentally come out.
