Bird Rope Toys : Homemade Bird Toys
This a bird toy that you can get really creative with. You have an opportunity to use a lot of different colors and shapes which is nice since birds are attracted to those type of things more than some other pets. The basic idea is to use a thin pet-safe rope and tie on smaller colorful pieces to it.
Now you can start attaching things to the rope. It might be helpful to actually attach short 3-8 inch pieces of dowel every so often along the length of the rope so that the bird can perch on it. If you don't make sure you suspend the rope near a perch so that they can get to it. At the bottom of the rope, tie a simple knot. If you have a drill, you can put holes through the dowels and thread them onto the rope. If not, you can simply tie the dowel directly onto the bottom of the rope and have that be the bottom piece.
Here's where it can get creative - you want to use colorful wooden blocks, pieces of wood, string, bells, wooden balls, narrow pieces of fabric and colored string. If the item does not have a suitable hole in it, you can tie it to the rope with another piece of string or fabric. If it does have a hole, just thread it onto the rope. Many craft stores will sell wooden balls and blocks that already have holes in them.
Leave a few inches at the top of the rope free so that you can tie it to the top of the cage. That's pretty much it. Use your imagination for this bird toy - you can have toys that use 2 or more ropes that are connected via dowels. It may not look pretty to you, but you can be sure if it's colorful and "fun" your pet will enjoy it.
Warning: Make sure to only use safe materials for this bird rope toy. You want to make sure every item you tie or thread onto the rope is non-toxic and has no very sharp edges. Be careful with using any metal or glass.
