Bird Swings : Homemade Bird Toys
A really easy first toy to make for your pet is a Bird Swing. They sell similar versions in the stores that look much nicer of course. In addition, since birds have a very good eye for color (unlike other pets like cats and dogs) it can help to have a gaudy looking swing that has a lot of color with it. However, you can try making this simple bird toy first to see if your pet likes it - and later if you'd like something different you can purchase it.
Next, find some safe sort of string or twine to form the top of the swing. A thin rope may also do the trick. Thread the string or rope through the tube and tie both ends to the top of the cage securely. This will create a triangular looking swing that your bird can hop onto. If you'd like the swing to be a standard rectangular one, don't tie the ends of the string as close together. That's pretty much all there is to it!
You can experiment with fancier bird swings by using multiple levels of cardboard tubes. After threading one end of the string through a tube, take another tube and poke some small holes in the ends of it. Tie a knot around 5 or 6 inches up each string and thread the string through the holes, making sure the knot is big enough so the string does not slip through. Then thread the remainder in the same way through the second tube. Tie both ends to the top of the cage as previously. Now you should have a double tube swing, with the bottom tube a rectangle and the top one as a triangle.
For variations, you can use coffee cans or small wooden boxes. Some people even use things like corncobs to form the swing. You can decorate your homemade bird swing with colored paper. If you are going to use paint or ink to color it, make sure it is animal safe. As always, please make sure your swing is created with an eye to safety at ALL times. You'll want to make sure the bird is still able to maneuver within the cage with the swing in it.
Warning: Make sure to only use safe materials for your homemade bird toy. The swing should not interfere with food or other items in the bird cage. Make sure there is no chance of the swing getting wrapped around anything else in the cage.
