Bird Toy Box : Homemade Bird Toys
Most birds love to carry around and play with small toys. These can be chew toys, toys that they grab with their feet, or ones they grasp with their beak. You can either make these small toys or purchase them. They are often made out of wood or acrylic plastic pieces.
One fun thing to do is to try and use a half an outer shell of a coconut as a toy receptacle for your bird. You can either buy these dry half shells at some craft stores or you can make your own. The best ones are the mature woody coconuts. You simply drain a coconut of its juice, crack it in half, and then scoop out the coconut meat. You can let this dry for a few days (be careful of drying it directly in the sun as the shell can sometimes crack).
Then you take the coconut half and just put the bird's toys inside of it. Simple and convenient. If you'd like to suspend the coconut shell from string, you'll have to drill some holes into the shell first. Be careful when doing this as the coconut shell is round and its easy to slip while drilling. Sometimes people like to paint the coconut shell bright colors - if you do that, make sure the paint is non-toxic.
Warning: Whatever material you use for the bird's toy box, make sure there are no sharp edges. For coconuts and wooden boxes, you may want to sand or grind down the edges to make sure they're smooth. Don't use metal boxes if you can avoid it, cardboard or wood is fine.
