The best cat toys are often very cheap or free ...
Cat Toy Paper Ball
One of the simplest cat toys that can also provide long hours of enjoyment for you and your cat is the rolled up ball of paper. This cat toy is very simple but is surprisingly often overlooked by cat owners who have their eye on more expensive cat toys. There are cats who will turn their noses up at five dollar glittery and jangly cat ball toys, but when confronted by the free paper ball cat toy will go crazy over it.
To make this cat toy, you take a plain sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper and crumple it into a ball, rolling it between your palms. You may need to really squash it down to give the cat ball some density so that it will roll better. You should end up with a packed paper cat toy ball around 1.5 inches in diamter. Make sure that the cat toy ball is big enough so that it cannot be swallowed and there are no sharp edges as cats are quite capable of getting cut.
And that's all there is to it! This cat toy works very well on floors like wood or tile, because unlike smooth cat toy balls, a cat toy paper ball has many dimples and indentations which tend to make a skittering noise when rolled. This is better than any loud bells inside expensive cat toy balls which are more likely to scare your cat than attract it. Remember that your cat is a hunter; he is more likely to be attracted to quiet scratching noise from prey that requires him to be stealthy than prey that is loud and attracts too much attetnion.
Show your pet the cat ball toy and wave it in front of him until it attracts his attention. Then roll the ball from one side of the room to the other. The cat will most likely give chase and will end up throwing the ball or even carrying it around in his mouth. This toy should make your cat pretty happy, but as always please supervise your cat to make sure nothing goes wrong.
Warning:do not make a cat ball toy out of aluminum foil because while it rolls very well, your cat can get cut on this toy ball and there are even instances where it can be fatal if swallowed.
