String Cat Toys
There aren't too many cats who can resist anything long and dangly like string. Everyone has string in their house or garage so constructing a string cat toy is s snap. But giving your cat a string toy will involve a little more work on your part than a cat toy ball since someone or thing has to hold one end.
A string cat toy can be anything but usually is yarn or string. Simply cut off enough string to make a cat toy (usually more than 3 feet to avoid accidental scratches!) and dangle or twitch it in front of the cat. Can drive the cat mad if he isn't allowed to grab it...
You may want to tie the cat toy string to something like a wooden spoon or wand so that you have something to hold while twirling it in front of the cat. The cat will usually strike at the tip of the string, and to give him something to aim for you can tie a double or triple knot at the end of your cat toy string. Once your cat knows that the string cat toy is actually a toy, try walking quickly or running around the house, dragging the end of the cat toy on the ground. This can get tiring but is an excellent way to get exercise for both the cat and you!
Warning: make sure that the string type won't be damaging to your cat. Fishing line is a bad choice and ribbon can get easily shredded and you don't want the cat to ingest that. A thicker string cat toy is better than thinner cat string toy.
