Toy Box House: Homemade Hamster Toys

Making a fun hamster box house for your hamster is really simple to do. The basic idea behind this one is simply an empty tissue box. Yep, that's all there is to it really!

Hamsters, like a lot of small pets, like little crawlspaces and will explore any of these structures with a avid curiosity. You can buy separate small plastic hamster enclosures, or you can just make your own! All you will need is an empty kleenex box that has a hole in the top. Some tissue boxes have some thin plastic sheet around the opening of the tissue box. You probably want to cut away any plastic on the front of the box.

One of the cool things about using a tissue box as a hamster mini-house is that the tissue boxes often have quite nice flower patterns or other cool artwork on it. So there's little need to decorate them, though you can do that too if you want. Simply take that tissue box and put it on its side so the face with the hole is on the side of the box. Place in your hamster's cage, or you can put it on the floor and let you hamster explore it himself.

You can also use other cardboard boxes like large milk cartons and juice boxes if you don't have tissue boxes on hand. Your hamster will like these just as well. The only thing is that you will have to cut holes in the boxes because the opening of the carton is not large enough to accommodate the hamster.

You may want to experiment with different size tissue boxes, or use more than one size. The most common tissue box is the rectangle, but they also have square ones. Cutting additional holes in the tissue boxes will let you tape them together for more hamster fun. You can also attach paper tubes to make interconnections between boxes. (If you do that, make sure they are securely taped so that the tube will not fall off under the weight of your hamster!)

It can be difficult to actually see your hamster, so if you want to you can cut the top of the box off so that your hamster is visible. He may not like it as much because it's open at the top, so you can alternate with some boxes cut off at the top and others not.

Warning: Don't forget your hamster in his play house. Also, you don't want to lift a box while the hamster is hanging on the end. Hamsters are particularly susceptible to falls, and their feet and toes are especially more delicate than you might think. As always, please supervise hamsters at ALL times to make sure nothing happens to them especially if you are playing with them outside their cages.
