A-Maze your Hamster : Homemade Hamster Toys

In can be a lot of fun to watch your pet run through his own little hamster maze. Putting some sort of treat at the end of the maze provides incentive for him to run through it. You can make this out of paper tubes, but one of the easiest ways is to use a flat cardboard box.

In order to create a fun maze for your hamster you want to start off with one of those flat open cardboard boxes that soda or soup cans come in as a base. Most stores like Wal-mart or CostCo, will have a lot of these sitting around that you can probably just take. The sides are about 2 inches high and the boxes are usually about a foot and a half by a foot.

Next, cut an opening on two opposite sides of the box. The opening should be about 2.5 to 3 inches wide. Now you'll need some strips from another box (of any size) in order to complete the hamster maze. Cut long strips of cardboard that are about the same width as the height of the walls in the flat box. The glue or tape them down to form pieces of your maze. It can take some thinking to make a really good "maze" but the good thing is that you can easily change it if you use tape.

That is pretty much the whole idea of the maze. You start your hamster in at one end. If the hamster doesn't want to get started, a good idea may be to actually attach a short paper tube to the end of one of the openings and try and see if he will run down the length of the tube and thus into the maze.

One funny thing is that since the walls of the hamster maze aren't too high, your hamster may sit up and say "hey, what's going on here?" and try to cheat by climb over the walls. If you have a large piece of clear plastic you can temporarily put this on top of the entire maze to prevent this. You may want to leave a bit of space open, or drill small holes through the plastic, to make sure your pet is getting enough air.

Warning: Be careful when your pet is in the maze. As always, please supervise hamsters at ALL times to make sure nothing happens to them especially if you are playing with them outside their cages.
