Hamster Swings : Homemade Hamster Toys
A really great toy to make for use in your pet's cage is a Hamster Swing. They do sell these in stores and most people just buy them there because they are a little more difficult to make than other home made hamster toys. However, you only need a few ingredients to construct one.
Either way, what you want to do is drill two holes on the same side of the can or roll at either end (drill on the curved side, not the flat ends). If you are using a wood can, you should cut off the closed end of the can first, and smooth the end with sandpaper. Hamster splinters are not good! Then get some thick twine, cord, or string (do not use metal) and put each end through each of the holes and tie a big enough knot so it doesn't come out.
Then, making sure there is enough rope so that the can is nearly on the floor of the cage, hang the swing from the top of the hamster cage. If there is no convenient attachment at the top of the cage, you can get a small flat piece of wood, hang the rope swing from that, and then slip the piece of wood between the bars at the top of the cage. Whee, your hamster swing is now ready for action!
Warning: Make sure that the swing is close enough to the bottom of the cage so your hamster can get in and out of it easily, and if he falls out there won't be that much harm done. Make sure not to use ANY metal, whether in the can or in the rope. As always, please supervise hamsters at ALL times to make sure nothing happens to them especially if you are playing with them outside their cages.
