Double Decker House: Homemade Hamster Toys
A more elaborate home made hamster toy to make is a two story hamster box house. This is very similar to a making a normal hamster box. The only difference is that there is two stories!
Next you want to stack the two boxes on top of each other and tape them together securely. You want the faces with the holes pointing out at the side in different directions. If they are pointing in the same direction, then the access to the bottom hole will be blocked by the hamster escalator that you are going to install! Well, it's more of a hamster walkway.
You need a way for your hamster to get up to the top floor of his house though. A simple way is to get a short cardboard tube, the same one used in the paper tube hamster toy. Cut the tube to the right length if too long. Tape the top of the tube to the top floor and leave the bottom as is (you could also temporarily tape that to whatever ground you are putting the house on). You will probably need to line the tube with some sort of material like cloth so that your hamster is able to grip it as he climbs through the tube and up to the second floor hamster house. Don't make the incline too steep.
Another way to make a walkway for the second floor is to get a piece of plywood or any thin wood that is about 3 inches wide and maybe half a foot long. Then glue on strips of cardboard or other small strips of wood to the walkway to give the hamster footholds to walk up.
In order to fit the walkway securely into the hole of the second floor box, you want to cut the hole so that it is "flat" on the bottom. Then you can put the walkway flat in the hole and secure it either with glue or scotch tape. There, your two story hamster house is done!
Warning: Don't forget to watch your hamster when he's in his house. Make sure the walkway is secure. As always, please supervise hamsters at ALL times to make sure nothing happens to them especially if you are playing with them outside their cages.
