 I get the feeling that I am supposed to blown away by this album. By the sheer force of the 70s throwback rock that emanates from it. I'm not, but don't quit reading now. Read on, by all means. The reviews seem to vary on Driver of the Year, from "don't waste your godamn time" to "get it because it's good spiffy classic retro revival rock". After listening, I think I'm feeling somewhat inbetween those poles. Songs like "The Squeeler" and "On This Stage", with the bouncing ¼ note piano/keyboard stabs are fun in that Turtles "Happy Together" way. And I get a Neil Young meets Superchunk vibe for "Sunburst Finish". It's not bad. I didn't like the more standard blues and rock of "Rock N' Roll Revolution", and "Rewind Sometime" sounds like something Billy Joel would have tinkered around with before he got out of that nasty Christie business. And I really didn't like the over-the-top closer "Cheap Ass Wine". Sounded just like that, a room of people drunken on cheap wine who might be making better music or conversation if they weren't drunk. I also am not a fan of the solos. But, to give credit they kept this disc short and to the point. It revels in a particular older sound. And it doesn't even bother to try hide behind any veil of newness. So maybe you might like it. Maybe everyone will like it. Maybe I should like it more. Can I go home now?
