The Marlboro Chorus
Good Luck (CD)

Upbeat quirkiness. Energetic drums. Strange song titles. Jiggering basslines and honkytonk type piano. If the song is the thing by which to imagine and dream, then the eccentric Marlboro Chorus have wildy succeeded. As pop songs, these auspicious tunes rock quite interestingly. The bouncy and bigger than life "Potters, Daisies" reminisces fondly about 1974, while "The Unrulable Child" reminds me of the Shins a bit. "Mrs. Bury-The-Bone" starts off at near terminal speed (sounds like a slower Afghan Whigs song off of "Gentleman") but quickly morphs Beatles-like into a faster number with nice high melodies. Beulah fans and other Elephant 6ers will probably like them. The piano seems to be quite a central figure in many songs. A refreshing change from a lot of completely guitar-driven bands.

"Car Parked, Girl Crying" borrows 60s chord changes for a drum thumping revival piece. "What's Your Alignment" is a bit dreamier and acoustic guitar driven (by alignment is that Dungeons and Dragons we're talking?) "Always One For Fun" is very Beatlesque, there is a little acoustic guitar riff that I can't place but I know I've heard it before. Maybe something off Abbey Road. The Marlboro Chorus are experts at taking songs we've all heard before and deconstructing them. It's like a reassembled jigsaw puzzle where the pieces sometimes didn't fit and were jammed together. Yeah, I know you did that, don't lie. The resulting songs are extremely familiar but different in minute ways. You'll find yourself thinking of a song that's just on the tip of your tongue. Frustrating! But fun!
