The Art Form Unknown Untitled (Demo CD-R)
The Art Form Unknown consists of John Powell and Jennifer Brundage and if their bio is to believed they may be found anywhere from London, Montreal, and Washington D.C. Jetsetters or long distance music pen pals? This is a sort of fun little quartet of demo songs that shine best when both members sing together because it tends to even out the roughness in some of the melodies. I usually don't get on a group's case for out of tune vocals (shmat knows I'm often guilty of that myself), but that was extremely apparent from the very first song until the end, especially on Jennifer's stuff. It's not necessarily a bad thing, and fits the cute swirling keyboard creations that back their traded off lead vocals. I think the cringe factor is upped slightly because while John's vocals are slightly buried in the background so it's harder to hear the offkey notes, Jennifer's voice is pretty high up in the mix. Without a lot of other stuff to distract besides the keyboards, I felt like that's all I heard after about the 2nd song. Though, I like the way they sing together though, very personable and cute in that K Records way. And sometimes she reminds me of Rebecca Pearcy, especially on "There's A Word For This". Maybe some work with balancing the different instruments and voices might help a bit if Art Form Unknown decide to release some future songs...
