Barsuk Records Future Soundtrack For America (CD)
It is in this spirit of rebellion, despair and hope that I have listened (and listened and listened) to Future Soundtrack for America. Unlike most politically motivated undertakings, this dynamic fundraising tool, put out in conjunction with MoveOn.org and Music for America by Barsuk Records, is fun for everyone! Of course, since it is a fundraiser for a variety of progressive organizations, there is going to be a relatively specific group of people buying this CD.
This disc unites 22 very different artists with very different sounds. The songs range from OK Go’s upbeat, optimistic “This Will Be Our Year” to Laura Cantrell’s hauntingly sad “Sam Stone”. Most of the songs included are only loosely political in nature. It isn’t that difficult, though, to take what is put before us and insert our own thoughts, both cynical and sincere. For example, when I hear Fountains of Wayne singing “Everything’s Ruined”, I think, “It certainly seems so.”
One of my favorite things about Future Soundtrack is that I can listen to it from start to finish without feeling compelled to skip over particular tracks. That may be rather faint praise, but really how many CDs can you say that about? My personal favorite cuts are Nada Surf’s “Your Legs Grow” and Elliot Smith’s “A Distorted Reality is Now a Necessity to be Free”.
In conclusion, let me encourage you to order your own copy of Future Soundtrack for America. Since your purchase will support some very worthwhile causes you can feel philanthropic while enjoying some fine tunes.
