Sawn Creator (CD-R)
 Under the auspices of the band name Animal, Aaron Nemec creates little hyper-active drum machine driven tidbits of songs that would make Jad Fair and Daniel Johnston convulse in fits o' glee. The songs are extremely no-fi, but unlike a lot of other similar CDs the they are actually quite pleasant for the most part. In fact, I quite enjoyed this more than some of the CDs from Half Japanese and other such shambling anti-structure bands that I have. On certain songs, like "Mint and Clean", Aaron sounds a bit buttergloryish, like an out of tune Matt Suggs. Another reference might be the Sentridoh vehicle of Lou Barlow or even The Fall.
The gritty, helter-skelter nature and purposely out of tune vocals of some of the songs may grate on certain listeners' nerves. But it didn't bother me after a bit of listening and in fact is quite charming and funny at times. It certainly helps that the tracks are for the most part pretty short; if they were seven minutes long a piece I might have to reach for the remote. But there's more than a couple tracks that are actually catchy as hell. If you're going to dig down among the rubble for Shaggs-ey like musical proficiency you could certainly do worse. I certainly dug it.
