The Pet Rescue (Cassette Tape)
 By Shmat! A fury of furry friends on the cover of this tape by Happy Go Lucky made the Shmat sit up and take notice. And once he got his tape machine going, it was all smooth sailing with this Swedish band's uptempo pop musings. The six songs on The Pet Rescue were created mainly by one Jan Lundgren and he does an excellent job of mixing drum machines, keyboards and light breathy vocals in a delicious, indiepop concoction. "Going Out" sounds like Men Without Hats' "Pop Goes The World" married with Masters of the Hemisphere, Beulah, or the Hangups. Charming in a word, the songs never stray too far from that formula beyond a slight tendency for wiggly flanged synth lines. The songs are also a bit moodier than more straightforward pop bands. "U are a Star" is quite a tender and touching ballad. The usage of grand and beautiful slide guitar in the much slower "Undone" makes the song sound a bit like Mojave 3. If there is a weakness on the tape it is only that the songs tended to sound a bit too similar after awhile. But because there's only six songs on the tape popaholics won't have the time to get bored. The Shmat was quite happy with this tape and it will easily find a home in his personal collection. And as always, one of his theories remains: so many good sounds out of Sweden, so little time!
