Jason Spiewak You Have Me Wrong (CD)
Man it is too easy to make some sort of comeback joke with a title like You Have Me Wrong. Really, I may have Jason Spiewak wrong when I peg him as a fairly decent piano player and singer in the vein of Ben Folds and Randy Newman but I think the majority of the people I hang out with would agree that this is pretty mainstream. But look, he never claimed to be an indie scenester or crazily experimental in his approach. His bio states "Jason Spiewak’s tunes are piano rock for working folks – not striving to outwit their audience or cling desperately to hipster ideals." With that kind of ambitions, there's really no need to listen too much further since he's not attempting to pull the wool over anyone's eyes and I don't need to listen deep for any hidden meaning. At least the guy is honest with the straightforward kind of rock that he's proposing. And I can be fully honest to say that the majority of the songs turned me off precisely because of that. At it's best, I can only say that the tone, melodies and song structures reminded me somewhat pleasantly of some of the School House Rock piano tunes from Saturday morning...
In the hands of a major music magazine, this CD might garner a lot of praise. Just not in my CD player. What do you expect, this ain't no major music magazine. Although, the last song "Through The Stormy Weather" had some sort of funny initial lines "Jesus shaved his beard / And got a day job at the stock exchange / he's much worse than I feared". That's about all I got to grin about though...
