The Drop Scene

 Unfortunately, I have very little to write about this particular band and/or record. You look at the artwork and you’re deceived and to me that is one of the dirtiest tricks a band can pull on a music critic. To fool you with the aesthetics of something that can potentially be something good, not great mind you but I was under the impression that this would at least be a record that could be classified under that of a decent nature. Boy was I wrong. You see the drop scene have the potential to be an alright indie pop band but I guess the main contention is the aimlessness and almost verging on thoughtlessness of the songwriting. I would provide you with examples but the truth is that it is more than evident when you listen to the first 4 tracks. You hear sneaking hints of early to mid tom waits, you hear the kinks, you hear the happy dronings of the birthday party (even though I’m sure that it was completely unintentional) and then unfortunately you hear the guitar stylings of dick dale. To the untrained ear this band just sounds like another coked out orange county surf rock band but if you listen even closer you find that this band isn’t coked out at all which is even more disappointing.
Although my personal feelings about this record are a bit harsh and maybe a little undefined I will have to admit that they did put effort into recording and that they are a band that is tight and you can tell that they’ve played together once or twice. They spent a buck or two on recording my main suggestion to the drop scene is to spend an extra minute or two on songwriting.
